The
Maya had great architectural skill. During the Classic period they
built large cities that included temples and piramids used for
religious rituals and for the observation of the heavens.
Some of the most important buildings are found in the cities of
Palenque, Tikal and Uxmal.
In order to support the weight of their buildings the Maya used a
distinctive architectural feature known as the "Mayan Arch".
